This Privacy Policy explains how Study Chinese ("we") collects, uses, and protects your data when you use our app and website at studychinese.id. By using our services, you agree to the practices described here.

1.Data we collect

Account data

• Email and password when you sign up with email.
• Display name, username, and profile photo that you choose or that are shared by your social login provider.

Data from social login

If you sign in with Google, Apple, or Facebook, we only receive your basic public profile information: name, email address, and profile photo. We never receive your password and never post anything to your social account.

Learning data

• The level and interface language you choose.
• Learning progress: XP, streaks, trophies, mastered words, review schedules, and practice results.
• For Jade Class students: assignments and progress shared with your teacher.

Trial class booking data

If you request a trial class, we store the student's name and age, Mandarin level, learning goals and format, time zone, contact details, and any notes you submit so our academic team can follow up on your request.

Tone Studio and speaking practice audio

Tone Studio analyzes your voice and tone contour directly on your device. Speaking practice can also generate a Mandarin transcript when an on-device speech recognition model is available. The app only enables speech recognition when iOS can run it on-device; if it is unavailable, practice uses local acoustic scoring with no transcript. Practice audio is not uploaded, stored, or shared with Study Chinese, Apple, or any other AI provider.

Bao AI (for Plus users)

Bao AI is the in-app chat tutor for Plus users. When you ask Bao something, we send the message you write together with a few earlier messages from that chat, the context of the screen you have open (for example your level, the lesson, or the word or question on screen, but never the answer to a question you have not answered yet), and, if "Bao remembers you" is on, a short summary of the words you often miss, the notes you saved, and your streak. If you choose "Show Bao my screen", one screenshot of the app is sent as well, only after you agree to it.

Your questions are answered by an AI model running on our own server. When that server is busy or cannot be reached, text messages (never screenshots) may be answered by backup AI providers: Cloudflare Workers AI and Alibaba Cloud Model Studio (Singapore). Both only process messages to produce an answer and state that they do not use API customer data to train models.

We do not store the content of Bao chats on our servers. Chat history is kept only temporarily on your device while the app is open, and the "Bao remembers you" summary and your notes are stored on your device; you can view, delete, or turn them off in "What Bao remembers". Screenshots are not stored. For usage limits we only count the number of messages per account, not their content. AI answers can be wrong, so double-check anything important.

The Bao voice conversation tutor is not yet available in this version, and practice audio is not sent to any AI service.

Problem report data

If you report a problem — by shaking your phone or through Settings › Report a problem — we receive the description you write, the category you choose, the screen you were on, the app version, and the app's most recent technical error log. That error log is automatically filtered to strip out passwords, tokens, email addresses, and text you typed yourself.

Screenshots are optional. We always show you the image first before it's sent, and you can turn the feature off with a single tap. Because a screenshot is an image, its content cannot be filtered automatically — whatever is visible on your screen at that moment is included, so check it before sending. Screenshots are stored in a private bucket that only our team can access, and are automatically deleted within 30 days at the latest. Deleting your account also deletes them. Shake-to-report can be turned off at any time in Settings.

Technical & device data

• Basic device information and logs needed to keep the app running and secure.
• Device permissions you grant, such as notifications, for learning reminders.

2.How we use your data

• Creating and managing your account, and syncing your progress across devices.
• Running core features: review scheduling, gamification, and recommendations.
• Sending notifications you've allowed, such as streak reminders.
• Connecting students with teachers in Jade Class.
• Following up on and scheduling trial class requests.
• Analyzing pronunciation practice and Mandarin transcripts locally on your device.
• Answer your questions to Bao AI and fit the answers to your level and the words you are learning.
• Maintaining security, preventing abuse, and improving the service.

We do not sell your personal data.

3.Third parties we use

We use trusted service providers to run the app. They only process data according to our instructions and are required to provide equivalent privacy and security protections:

• Supabase — database hosting, authentication, and storage of accounts and learning progress.
• Resend — delivering trial class booking notifications to our team.
• Google, Apple, Facebook — only if you choose social login.
• Vercel — hosting for this site, including aggregate visit statistics with no cookies.
• Google Analytics — site usage statistics, active only after you agree to it.
• Cloudflare Workers AI and Alibaba Cloud Model Studio (Singapore) — backup AI providers for Bao AI, processing text messages only when our server is busy or cannot be reached.

This site uses analytics cookies only if you agree through the consent banner. If you decline, Google Analytics is never loaded and no analytics cookie is stored. Vercel's visit statistics run without cookies and do not identify you personally.

4.Storage & retention

We keep your data while your account is active. Practice audio and Mandarin transcripts are processed only on the device and are not stored by us. Screenshots you send with a problem report are kept for at most 30 days. We do not store the content of Bao AI chats; we only count the number of messages per account for usage limits. If you delete your account, we delete your personal data and your problem reports with their screenshots as described on the Data deletion page.

5.Your rights & data deletion

You can access, correct, or delete your data at any time. To delete your account and all related data, follow the steps on the Data deletion page.

6.Children

Our standalone app is intended for users aged 13 and older. To book a class for a student under that age, a parent or guardian must submit the form on the child's behalf; we only use the child's age and learning needs to recommend and schedule classes. If you believe a child has provided data without guardian consent, contact us so we can delete it.

7.Security

We use encryption in transit and access controls to protect your data. No system is 100% secure, but we work to protect your data to a reasonable standard.

8.International transfers

Data may be processed on servers outside Indonesia by our service providers, including Bao AI messages answered by backup providers in Singapore or on Cloudflare's global network. We ensure adequate protection for that data.

9.Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes through the app or website, and the "in effect starting" date above will be updated.
